One million apologies to my most dedicated of followers who have been anxiously awaiting any sort of post while I’ve been gallivanting around town, avoiding this blog as well as most things reminding me that I’M LEAVING soon. Some slightly large news: as of 10:30 this morning, I am officially a college graduate! I only had one final this year, and while I probably could have failed and still passed the class, I in fact did pretty ok and am fairly confident I will be receiving my diploma. I’m not walking at commencement (something about my dad saying, “I’ll pay you to not make me sit through that ceremony”) so all that’s left is quite a bit of celebrating. Things are looking pretty fantastic on the career front, though I’ll save that for those of you who know me beyond my sarcastic Internet persona which is surely a front for my paralyzing insecurities.

I suppose I could update you on how I went home for Mother’s Day or how NPH had quite a successful birthday on Tuesday, but at this point: I’VE GRADUATED, BITCHES– and that’s really all that matters. If you are looking for a gift, please send cash, checks, yen, gift cards, IOUs, and spare change to my home address. I will also consider it a gift if you never ask me, “What are you doing after graduation?” “Ooh, what does that company do?” “Where are you going to live?” “Who’s going to take Fergus?” “What’s Neil doing?” or, possibly my favorite, “Are you two going to stay together while you live in different cities?” I’m quite seriously considering printing out the answers to all of the above frequently asked questions on index cards and passing them out at the graduation festivities my mother has planned that will span all three days of next weekend. Seriously, just say “Congrats” and pass me a beer. You automatically win the game.

Thank you to my professor this morning who either mysteriously read my blog or just my mind, because he informed us during class that college is a cake walk and our lives will only be busier the older we get. Ausgezeichnet!

Speaking of German stuff, Deutsche Bahn cancelled my Bahn Card. Cue the Hallelujah chorus! I’d emailed them a very painful, “Hi, sorry my German’s pretty bad, could you cancel my card since I’m not in the country anymore,” email on the day after it was scheduled to be renewed (oops) and today got a reply. Apparently you’re supposed to notify them six weeks prior to the renewal date, but were considering this an “exceptional circumstance” and cancelling it as an “act of goodwill.” For as much as those people love rules and reprimanding those who don’t know or follow them, this is all nothing short of a miracle. I hope they had a lovely guffaw over my email and lack of general knowledge about the runnings of their system, but I now retract everything I previously said in hatred about the Deutsche Bahn.

I made NPH and I spaghetti for dinner last night while watch the State of the Union (Obama rocked it) and Teen Mom 2 (boring episode) because I’m the epitome of domesticity. It was awesome, one of those foods I forget exists and never eat often anyway, but once I did I was all, “This is ausgezeichnet!” (Which Google Translate is showing me means ‘awarded’ but so obviously means ‘excellent’.)

There’s no more denying that school is officially back in session, and it seems I’d forgotten how jam-packed busy the first couple weeks of each semester are. I only have two classes Monday-Thursday, none on Fridays, which I haven’t since sophomore year. I’ll only have to work four days a week in the real world, right?! Those aren’t very difficult as of yet, homework is minimal, and to say that I’ve gotten faking concentration, skimming, and summarizing down to an art form in this last semester would be an understatement. The thing that’s got me feeling exhausted only two weeks in, however, are my extracurriculars (and no, I’m not talking about those that involve elevating my blood alcohol content.) In addition to class, I have a job, an internship, and am on the executive board of a pretty big student org on campus. I realize there are scads of my peers who are in the same boat, if not even more busy, but these three things demand a lot of my attention a lot of the time. Thankfully, things for PRSSA will die down after the large event we’re putting blood, sweat and literal tears into gets over with in February. Sometimes I feel bad that my time isn’t spent focusing as much on my marketing internship as it should because I’m so busy at my actual job where I’m busy promoting our newest program, planning events, and sitting on a team to create and implement a very big pledge campaign to be revealed this summer. (And no, this isn’t meant to be bragadocious, I’m just keeping my grandma all up to date on what’s going on with my life.) I find myself not only being excited for graduation just because I’m still under the illusion that I’ll magically feel like an adult come May, but because once I do get a full-time job, there will be only one big picture item on which to devote my energy. I’m not really complaining about all the various projects I’m currently filling my time with– if anything, it’s a really great feeling to check lots of things off my to-do list every night and see concrete results once something is finished. Just letting you know, that’s what’s on my my mind.

…and for all of you Millenials over there, head on over to The Next Great Generation where it’s 90s week and you can read cool posts about Hey Arnold and stuff. I really, really liked Hey, Arnold!

Because I was such an amazing girlfriend during NPH’s illness, he decided to take me out to eat as a way of saying thank you. Sure, he could have gotten flowers or some dumb card, but this kid knows the way to my heart. So to Texas Roadhouse we went today, because one: I seem to be coming back from my previous vegetarianism with a vengeance, and two: he had never been. I KNOW. My boyfriend, who might as well have barbecue sauce pumping through his veins in lieu of blood, had before today never been to Texas Roadhouse. Egads. It is because of this amazing, rolls-on-the-table, pick two sides with your entree of ‘cued meat establishment, I am now in a full-on food coma on the couch while Fergus sleeps on my lap and Neil flips between infommercials, Pawn Stars, and the Bears-Packers game. (I’ve decided to cheer for the Bears today for really no other reason than I’m feeling fickle toward the Packers this season.) The ol’ Roadhouse didn’t disappoint (I had the ribs, he had the pulled pork, we shared, it was adorable) and of COURSE I was all, “You know I ate eight of these rolls one time in five minutes to win a roll-eating competition during Relay for Life our freshman year, right?!??!” Yes, Brittney. We all know. I informed my dining companion that I’m 100% certain I could shatter my previous record, but since I was already branded a freak for wearing flip-flops, I decided to not give the neighboring tables anything more at which to stare. (Don’t ask– 713 had a small-ish soiree of 100+ people last night and I didn’t feel like pulling on my fashion boots just to head out to lunch. So I borrowed a pair of Bryce’s flip-flops, obviously.) Apparently I have “homework” that’s “due tomorrow” because we’re still in “college” and life isn’t just one long “winter break.” As you may have inferred from the air quotes, I believe none of this. Priority numero uno is a nap, and hopefully when I wake up, it will magically be again the day after Christmas and I will have zero responsibilities in the upcoming weeks.

(For those of you stopping by just to check in on the state of NPH’s health, he is in fact still alive and doing well. Now he just has a really, really annoying cough that makes me want to throw the dog at him whenever he starts a-hackin’.)

The first week of classes went by pretty unremarkably (Wordpress is still me that’s spelled wrong, but Dictionary.com says it’s an acceptable adverb. Huh.) though I did get to do the add/drop slip dance on Thursday because one of my classes was already unbearable and not looking to get much better. I realize I could have just sucked it up, but it’s my last semester here, people; my lack of interest in the subject combined with the workload was setting me up for quite the uphill battle I had no intention of attempting. TURNS OUT the boyfriend and I have two classes together, one is a really fun elective that nearly everyone I know is taking, the other is a political science class from a professor I enjoyed last semester. At first I think we (ok, probably just he) were like ehhhh that’s weird, but it’s really not that bad. It’s not like we can sit there and gab like besties– we’re in a class like any other, it just turns out I might get walked home by the person sitting next to me afterward. I feel this will also work hugely to my advantage around test time because he’s a diligent student who does the readings, whereas I spend my time “studying” harassing him for pretzel M&Ms and checking out job opportunities in Boston.

Speaking of moving far away places, Roomie Lauren has some amazing opportunity to move to Dublin because she rocks socks at well, everything, and last night I was all omgI’llcomewithyou and we’ll make a fabulous life in Ireland together! Because ok, we may have been at a bar. We shook on and it were dreaming of Irishmen and lush hills of Guinness all evening, so this morning I decided to Google “moving to Dublin.” Turns out Dublin’s one of the most expensive cities in the world, and it’s not all that easy to just up and move to another country. She’s still sleeping so I won’t interrupt her clover-filled dreams, but I’m probably going to stay Stateside, at least for a while until I can afford more than a shack and a half-passable work visa.

Oh and shout-out to my family already in Hawaii and those will be soon arriving for a wedding!!

Roomie Rachael and I are headed to our dreaded Thursday morning class. An occasion that could be cause for celebration– all the snarky whispering we do during “work time” is cause for much intra-apartment bonding– is overshadowed by the fact that this class is downright sucky. Yes, I thought an adjective I used primarily in grade school was the perfect word for the impending two hours we’ll soon be dragging our feet toward. I’m out of Keurig pods (APOCALYPSE!!!) so will be stopping by the library for a cup o’ joe on the way. While I had tried going cold turkey on caffeine about a month ago, I then read conflicting evidence that caffeine can actually be good for you, so now I’m just all kinds of confused. I drink one cup of coffee a day now, if any, and it’s the HORRID diet sodas that I’ve given up– not because of the caffeine but because of the nasty, vile aspartame that was denied EIGHT TIMES by the FDA before being approved for consumption. Because this is my blog, I’m not going to attribute that to any source, you can just Google it yourself.

Today I’m thankful for our country’s service men and women– past, present, and future. I certainly don’t have the guts to do what they did, are doing, will do, so for that I commend them and say a very Happy Veterans’ Day.

And finally, if you’re looking for a much deeper, readable, kick-ass blog post than any you will find on this site, head on over to Meryn’s blog and get caught up on Stuff Black Ladies Like inspired by a brilliant hashtag on Twitter. Don’t get me started on Twitter trending topics, especially sponsored ones (or ones like, for example, #nicknamesinmyphone, which is currently trending. The only nickname I have in my phone is T-Bone for my mother. No one on Twitter would get that, and since all tweets are being documented by the Library of Congress, I feel I don’t need to waste their time with telling them so. I do, however, sometimes feel it necessary to tweet about what I’ve just eaten, any medical situations– real or imagined– I may be facing, and Fergus’ every move.) Uhhh, in conclusion, Meryn’s going places in life, whereas I just consider the fact that I had a bagel for breakfast a giant WIN.

This morning Roomie Rachael and I got up early to ROCK THE VOTE down at the ol’ rec center. We were voters number 8 & 9, and there was no shortage of little old ladies manning the ballot tables. The entire process took about seven minutes; it was the first time I’ve voted at an actual polling place. In 2008 I voted absentee, and I have memories of going to the polling place with my mom when Ben and I were little. This morning I was oddly excited to blacken those little bubbles (no, I won’t tell you how I voted… ok, YES to repeal the 21 ordinance, though I have a feeling it will stay in place, and YES to retaining our judges. I won’t get started on people who think those who are different than them don’t deserve the same rights– they don’t deserve my blog space.) We grossly overestimated the amount of time it would take, so set up camp in the journalism building to snarkily comment on the morning’s current events from around the world.

“I know I would be if I had to spend that much time with the Jonas brothers.” –Rachael, on the likelihood that Demi Levato entered rehab for being coked out of her mind.

Yesterday I had my final pre-registration meeting with my academic adviser for my LAST semester of college. I had the dilemma of choosing between one really hard class that would most likely be quite beneficial to my eventual career, or choosing a pretty cushy class since the likelihood of me being able to give a damn any more than I currently do is about -500%. The jury’s still out on which I’ll get into/ register for. I’m pretty excited to fill up my final 13 credit hours with superfluous electives– fitness walking, anyone?

Fergus is three months old today! And he’s getting huge. And by huge I mean long and kinda fat, but only fat in really weird places. And by that I mean he looks pregnant.

Classmate: “Money.”
Instructor: “Money is an excellent example. What else?”
Me: “Food.”
Long silence from the class.
Instructor: “Food. Um, ok. Are you motivated by food?”
Me: “Of course!”
Instructor: “So like, um yeah, I guess if you wanted a sandwich, you might do something for someone…”
Me: “I would definitely do something for a sandwich.”
I thought of you during the entire exchange, Kayla.

I’m pretty excited about this week for many reasons. Tomorrow is my chance to redeem my less than stellar midterm grade because we’re having another one. Afterward, there’s a BIG EVENT for another of my classes– the thing we’ve been working on all semester, the thing I’ll be quite glad is over. After that, not to jinx myself, it will be smooth sailing until my one final in December. I’ll have regular homework and stuff for both of my jobs, but the big projects will be done-zo.
This weekend I went back to where I interned for the summer and put in some mad hours at their annual Halloween event. I was surprised to come back and find Fergus had grown a lot in like 72 hours. He’s taking to running/bounding/careening from room to room since his legs have finally grown a bit. I have zero interest in Halloween this year, but it’s the last weekend I’ll be in Iowa City until… December? so will make the most of it. I’ll half-ass a costume last minute at best.
OH and I got a B+ in one of my classes that just ended. While normally I wouldn’t be psyched about this, it’s pretty high for the amount of effort I put into it which was next to nothing (it was for my major which was now a minor which I chose to finish out only because it was just an eight week course.)
There you go, Natalie– not exciting, but a post nonetheless. Time to do my readings for my test tomorrow… ha… nervous laughter.

Say hello to Brittney “Journalism & Mass Communication major, International Studies minor.” It feels pretty good, not gonna lie, mostly because I get to drop my dreaded linguistics class. Cue the parting of the clouds and the Hallelujah chorus. In order to make up for some of those lost credit hours, I’ve added an online money management course and some as-yet-to-be-determined one hour fitness class that will start in mid-October, but really anything is so, so much better than subjunctive clauses. In other news, I fly to D.C. in two weeks. I most definitely thought this was at least three weeks away, but at least I still have time to rummage Target’s racks for multiple super-professional outfits before departure. There are plenty of things to look forward to until then, namely Roomie Rachael’s 22nd birthday on Sunday. Luckily for our livers, she’ll be out of town for most of the weekend doing a Buddy Walk with her adorable nephew, but she’ll grace us with her presence just in time on the actual day to enjoy Happy Sunday sushi and perhaps a viewing of The Social Network. Apparently this movie is just beyond off the chain (does anyone still use that phrase anymore? No?) though I have a feeling I’m going to get supremely creeped out by it. (Also, Wordpress is telling me that “creeped” is not actually a word. They are so, catastrophically mistaken.) I apologize this wasn’t a riveting, gut-busting post (yes, I’m still under the assumption there a few of these on here) but I wanted everyone updated on the fact that I was not on a bridge somewhere and have gotten my academic life under control, for now at least. In the meantime, I get to hand in that glorious drop slip and then perhaps literally skip to work. Happy-it’s-essentially-the-weekend!
